Different Types of uPVC Window Handle Explained: A Comprehensive Guide

Deciding which window handle types will look best with your windows becomes difficult because various handle types are available. Not getting into the details and choosing the wrong window can totally ruin the overall appearance of your otherwise beautiful windows.

Wondering which uPVC window handle types will suit your style of windows best? Do not worry. We will take you through various options in this article. Keep reading to understand which type of window handles will work best for your windows.

Different types of window handle

Here are the types of uPVC window handles given below:

Cockspur window handles

Cockspur window handles are commonly found in older uPVC and aluminum windows because they do not have an internal mechanism to close the window. You will also find them in caravans due to the slim frame windows.

Unlike Espagnolette (below), Cockspur window handles have a spur instead of a spindle on the back of the handle.

Espagnolette

‘Espagnolette handles’ belong to popular window handle types and are usually found on modern double-glazed windows. Espag window handles carry a metal spindle on the back fixed in a position to allow for a film and safe fixture. Such handles turn into a series of multi-point locks.

‘Espagnolette’ window handles come in two options – in-line and cranked. In-line uPVC window handles are straight and turn left or right. Therefore, these handles are known as universal uPVC window handles. On the other hand, cranked handles come in left and right-hand variations.

Venetian window handle

Venetian window handles are typically fixed with two bolts, like the Espag handle (above). However, these handles have a low projection from the frame, contrary to the Espagnolette handle.

A Venetian window handle is beneficial as the handle does not poke through the blinds, which is a common problem with other window handle types.

Tilt and turn handles

You can find these types of handles on windows and patio doors. Tilt and turn handles are usually used in high-rise flats because their design makes them easy to clean from the inside.

These handles also have a 7mm spindle on the back, as Espag handles.

Replacing handles on uPVC windows

Replacing uPVC window handles is simple if the handle is replaced with the same style. It becomes vital to check whether the new window handle for replacement will fit into the holes on the uPVC window and if the spindle size is the same.

While replacing a handle on a uPVC window, you should get the same window handle from your manufacturer. You can use universal window handles like Espag.

However, consult your manufacturer before replacing a window handle to avoid future problems.

Bottom line

Window grips hold a special place in homes. You can opt for uPVC window handles depending on your window styles and needs. UPVC window handles have various benefits, including sound insulation, UV protection, impact and chemical resistance.
